Default Confusing Starting Issue

After reading through old threads and my Hayne’s manual with no luck, I figured the next step would be to try my luck here.

The car is an 88 245, Auto, with about 300k on the clock.

After parking it while running errands the other day, I got in to start it up, and it wouldn’t crank. It’s making one loud “click” when I try to start it, but is accompanied by no other sounds. I have eliminated the starter (works perfectly on the bench), neutral safety switch (disabled) , and battery (12.7V static) to be potential causes. Is there anything I could be missing here?

Thanks,
Tom

Seems like you are not getting power to the starter if it is working. Maybe the ignition (key) switch? The engine can turn over? I mean it is not locked up for some reason? Is this one of the years with the bad wiring? I have read about them, don't know what years exactly they are. I thought '87 might be the last year for that, but not sure. The clicking sound you get, is that the starter? If so you are getting power there but not enough to turn it over. Maybe the starter is bad. Bench check shows ok but it actually is not putting out enough torque to turn over the engine? My .02.

Yeah, the clicking is coming from the starter and it’s not cranking. I’ll replace the wiring running from the battery to the starter and see where that gets me.
Thanks!

Update: Replaced all that wiring and it fired right up. Good thinking man, I really appreciate it!
