Default Starter issue

I have a 1986 740 GLE wagon and every once-in-awhile when i try and start it the starter clicks and doesn’t turn the motor. When this happens I turn the motor by hand then I turn the key the car starts. Usually when I turn the key the car starts right up. Is that a sign of a bad starter

Could be the solenoid or the starter. May be the brushes in the starter. Then again how good is your battery. I would make sure the battery is fully charged and check the connections at the starter. The clicking sound is the solenoid trying to push the pinion gear into the flywheel and make contact with the starter motor.

Looking from the front of the car it will be down on the right side low and in the rear of the engine.

you could also check/clean ground wire coming from negative terminal on battery.

follow the fat red wire from the battery + terminal, it goes directly to the starter. the starter is along side the transmission

Most likely you have a bad starter that needs to be changed... $60+ an hr labor.
