Default Coolant Flush

I'm going to flush my coolant this weekend in my 240. Is it best to drain the old stuff from by pulling the lower radiator hose or is it better to use the drain on the block?

Any other suggestions for someone who has never done this before?

You have to drain the radiator from the hose, the block from the drain on the block. Watch for air pockets afterwards, they can be tricky!

If I pull the lower radiator hose it seems like coolant is going to go all over that cross member right below it. Do you just have to deal with coolant everywhere?

Also, is there a good write up or video tutorial on how to do this for a 240? I can't seem to find one.

The radiator MAY have a drain plug... Otherwise, the messy coolant all over is the only way. Draining a coolant is pretty straight forward thing--Youtube may have something.

I usually flush the system by first draining the block then the radiator. The block drain you can attach a hose and run it to a bucket. I drain the radiator by removing the hose from the water pump. I put a big bucket right underneath the water pump, remove the hose and point it down into the bucket.

I haven't seen a Volvo or Nissens radiator with a drain plug.

See, that's the thing. The radiator sits on top of that cross member. There's no way to access the bottom of the radiator. THIS car seems to be different than most that I've seen in regard to this. That's why I was looking for a write-up on 240s specifically. I can't seem to find one. It doesn't exist on youtube.

If I pop that lower hose off, antifreeze is going to make a huge mess (more than it normally would). I still can't believe that no one else has had this question and/or figured out a way around it... or made a video.

We were writing our posts at the same time.

Hadn't thought of taking the hose off at the WP side. It seems so obvious. Thanks!
