Default cross-country drive prep

Hi All,

I'm getting ready to drive from SC to OR and need some advice on what to replace/check before the trip. I have a 92 240GL sedan, auto, 160k, second owner. Just had recent tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters, fuel pump relay), planning to relace all belts, rad hoses, thermostat, coolant, and frt brakes. Tires are in good shape. AC was just serviced. Timing belt and tensior replace at 150k.

I plan on mostly interstate driving about 10 hrs/day. Will it handle 70 - 80 mph all day? Thanks.

Sounds like you are ready. Check air pressure in the tires. Almost any modern car will go 70 to 80 all day. Won't even strain it.

I used to do a lot of long distance driving from Georgia to Maine, typically non-stop (well except for fuel and potty breaks)...LOL.......Anyhow it seems like your car is set for the trip, just be sure to change your coolant a few days before you leave to make sure all of the air is out of the system. Here's a few things I used to take with me - flashlight, air-pumpand tire gauge, can of fix a flat, cell phone, duct tape, electrical tape, a basic tool kitand a ton of CD's.

Enjoy your trip and be safe!!

Dale

You did save your old cap and rotor when you did the tune-up, didn't you? The same with the coil wire.

A minor item, does the hand brake hold?

The 240 would drive 90 all day without even breaking into a sweat.

Don't forget a roll of duct tape and a wire hanger.

I have a lot of extra parts. Yes, the hand brake holds. Thanksfor all the feedback...I'm looking forward to the trip. Just installed XM radio for the long days.

I am leaving for Western Michigan from SoCal in a couple weeks or so. Just waiting for a break in the weather.

To prepare I'm doing some major repairs on my 740 Wagon. New clutch (Ouch!), A/C (Ouch!!!), starter, drive shaft bearing and support. The rest of the car is mechanically excellent and has been meticulously maintained considering its near 18 year age and 190k miles. It is one of the smoothest rides I've ever owned, entirely different than a similar 240 wagon.

Why didn't anybody say how great these 700 series cars are?
