Default Differences b/w 240 & 940, same year (1993)

Hi all,
I did a little bit of searching on this but didn't find to much, so I'll just ask...

What are the main differences b/w a '93 240 and 940, aside from body and interior layout of course...?

Our current family car is a '93 940 (before which we had a '86 240) and I saw a '93 240 for sale locally that might be a good buy. What differences are there under the hood...I'm interested in engine, trans, electrical...or did Volvo just use the same components with a different body?

The car I'll go look at has 227,000 miles, '93 wagon- they're asking 1,800 or best offer...what's a good price?
Thanks for any insight!

Well besides the obvios, Size, interior, exterior. I believe the 940 had independent rear suspension. And had the option to come in turbo guise. Thats about it.

940 is a more advanced technologically model BUT the engine, transmission are the same. The electricals are different: wiring, switchgear, etc. It's a little roomier, with a longer wheelbase so it rides better. Much more ergonomical, with more conveniences like dual airbags, power seats, bigger gas tank, ltd slip rear end; of course the turbo which went on till 1995 in the US, till 1998 in Europe in the 940 but was axed in the 240 in the US in 1985. Also, the 940 never came with a stick in the US market unlike the 240. The 940 was basically an improved 740 even though the two coexisted in the US for a couple of years, 1991-2 after which the 740 was ended.

The comparison is like saying an apple and potato.. They are polar opposites. One essentially a late 70's early 80's car that over time was just kept the same and eventually went from carbs. to FI. The motor remained essentially the same while had a few changes in the decade+ that was out for sale. The other one was essentially the flagship of Volvo. As the flagship always has the lates in technology and creature comforts......The 240's have a hard core cult/underground following! Personally I choose the 240 over the big 940. Personal taste and preference. In the end if both are treated correct, they will be super reliable with many more years of service left to give... Good Luck in your search!

Thanks for the input everybody.
Well, I went ahead and bought it! yahoo
It's really a nice car, and there is not much I need to do to it right away (and a bunch of stuff I can do myself).
I'll be back here often enough to ask questions as I get my elbows greasy.

I'm a happy camper, that's for sure
