Default Different types of ZF racks for 240dl?

Hi,

I have 1988 Volvo 240dl and my steering rack is leaking. I have a ZF type 3 rack. I found a ZF rack at the junk yard and it was type 3 as well so I put it in and its leaking too. I have to get it rebuilt.

My question is, the two ZF racks are different, casting on the passenger side of one is much larger than on the other one (other one actually doesnt have casting), other than that they seem identical. I am guessing they are interchangeable but I am wondering why are they different or any more info about it.

The full story is, I took it to rebuilder and they told me they dont have my original one and they have to rebuild it. After few hours I get a call and they tell me its not rebuildable, I take them my other one I got from the junkyard and they have that one in stock. I kinda feel bad I didnt know that from the get go and they had to take my original apart before finding out I have a slightly different one that they have in stock. So whats the difference and is it ok to use either one? I know there is CAM, TRW and ZF, but different type of ZF I didnt know exist.

Thank you!
