Driveshaft , just an inquiry
Having done several Jag V-8 conversions I would usually replace the 2 piece drive shafts with a 1 piece aluminum unit. This was possible due to the spline was usually in the transmission tail shaft with GM's. With our 89 740 and over 300K miles I had changed the carrier bearings and the bearing support along with the U joints. I was curious to know if anyone has replaced the 2 piece unit with a 2 piece short spline without a center bearing assembly. Just asking to see what experience you've had.
I doubt anyone would have done that. What would be the gain? The savings of eliminating the carrier bearing are more than offset by the cost and hassle of sourcing a new driveshaft. And it probably would not work as well as the stock set up.
the reason for the pivot joint in the middle is so the axle length doesn't shift as much when it goes up and down (since the rear half axle is at about the same radius distance as the trailing arms), also so that the axle doesn't come through the floor of the car in a wreck.
I was curious because it would simplify the rotational balance of the system. The Volvo conversions that I have seen where it was with a GM auto box use a 1 piece driveshaft. This is doable because the transmission tailshaft is splined. Volvo transmissions have a fixed tail shaft but if you use a short spline 2 piece shaft it looks like a simple installation and eliminates a good number of parts. As for price it is not a big deal maybe $300-$400 for the shaft with U joints. Just curious that's all.
I want to know what have happened to the jag motors youve pulled. I own a 94 XJ12 (6.0 L) and am looking for another motor. Actually I want a whole car that is not running or in bad shape that I can use as a parts source.
Thanks
Thanks
I sold them years ago. 2 V12's and a 4.2 6 cyl. Check a few of the Jaguar forms as you might find some there.
