I recently acquired an 89 740. The p/s hose had split and spewed fluid on the exhaust, which promptly caught on fire. most of the damage has been repaired except for replacing the p/s hoses and the timing belt cover. There is no underhood sticker to tell me what engine it has.

So....how do I tell which engine it has. Anyone know which VIN digit applies? According to the VIN it should be an auto tranny, however, it has a 5 sp manual; so Things may have been changed by a PO. Any visual clues to engine ID?

You probably have a B230f,but I posted pic's of both a 8 valve and a 16 valve.
