first post, 240 questions
hi,
my volvo auto-bio goes something like this: i bought my first car in portland, oregon about 5 years ago for the sole purpose of moving home to the midwest. it was an 1983 volvo dL wagon (manual, $1350). it ran for 3 more years well past 300k and i loved it. after that i returned to biking/busing. last summer i got hit by a car biking, and needed a car again. i was pretty broke and couldn't find another 240, so i picked up an '82 bmw 320i for $700 hoping just to get through the winter. it had some quirks, but i was able to fix most of them on the cheap. anyways, it broke down in december, and has sat snow-covered in my driveway since. i never really quite liked it, so i've just settled on being car-less until i found another 240. anyways, the reason for this long-winded post is that i've finally found two clean 240s and am trying to decide between them. one is an 1987 240dL sedan (170k/rust-free/owned by a mechanic), the second is a canadien 1980 242dL with 50k(sic) and very little rust. (both are manual). the situation with 87 is pretty straight-forward, i could pick it up next weekend cash in hand. the situation with the 242, the one i'm really infatuated with, is a little different (friend of a friend of a friend type of thing). the guy seems solid and knows a reasonable amount about the car. i'm just not sure what a fair price is. he told me to make an offer. i'm a little wary of internet appraisals and my budget is around $4000. any advice would be very much appreciated. also, can anyone confirm that the B21A engine in the 242 is non-interference? i'm pretty sure it is. thanks.

It's hard to answer this kind of question... what is the question? I think $4000 is a good amount for a 240-you should be able to get a very nice one. These cars you are looking at are sticks, DISCOUNT! (most people prefer autos)... Also, DLs, DISCOUNT!
"Very little rust", hm... there is more than you think-iif you see any, there is a LOT you don't see...
You should be able to get them both for $4000...
