Default front crank seal/crank pulley question (researched)

This is for a 1993 volvo 940 non turbo, regular b230f engine with no modifications.

First question: I had a moderate oil leak coming from the bottom of the front timing belt cover area, after research in the forum it seemed it was from the front crank seal (or one of the various front seals.) After placing the seal I was looking at the front crank seal and wondering how recessed it should be in that little metal cover area. There was nothing behind it to stop it so I could theoretically push it in as deep as I want, right now it is just tad further than flush in there but I was wondering if you all had some experience with how far that front crank seal is supposed to be set into that slot down there.

Second question: This is kind of a noob question. I lined up all the marks on the pulleys, but I think I put the crank on when it was on the down stroke? How can I make sure they are all lined up on TDC on the correct stroke, do I do the spark plug trick where I remove the first plug and listen for the air escaping when I move the crank?

Any help would be great on these questions, as I researched I couldn't find definitive answer on the first question specifically.

*I did replace the flame trap, oil separator box and the water pump while I was down there.

Put the seal a little more IN than flush, may be 1-2 mm... I use the old seal to tap onto the new, gently and uniformly (make sure the lip around is more or less equal).

As long as ALL the marks are lined up, you are fine! Once you have it all on, spin the engine by the crank all the way around a couple of times, then check the marks again. If they are still lined up, you are good. One good thing about this motor, if you are off, no engine damage happens. I start and run the motor before I close it all back up--you should be able to tell if you are good on the timing.
