Default Front rotor changin'

I'm a little confused regarding changing of my front rotors. Manual says "remove caliper as described in section 4. You do not need to disconnect the lines" Then in section 4 it says "disconnect the lines". There is hard pipe wrapped around from the caliper to the rubber hose. I need to flush all of the brake fluid, but I prefer to not break (non leaking) connections. Thanks in advance!

Dave

Does Section 4 not cover thereplacement of the calipers which would necessitate the lines being disconnected? The other Section refers you to Section 4 to show what needs to be done totake the calipers off, but does tell you not to disconnect the lines as it is not a part of replacing rotors (discs).

I have never disconnected lines to replace discs. Tie the caliper up out of the way to avoid strain on the lines.

If you are just changing the rotors, thats all you need to take off. Don't worry about the break lines etc. Just make sure thoes calipers are taken care of. Oh use lots of break cleaner as well.

Thanks all- Dont have the book in front of me, but I think it says- step 3 " remove caliper as described in section 4" then when I get to section 4 it says "disconnect lines toremove caliper. " The hard lines seem to be wrapped pretty tightly around the (strut?) then go to a rubber hose. Guess I unbolt the caliper from the steering knuckle and move caliper, hard lines and all out of the way. I've done plent of brake jobs in my day, I've never see a setup line this before. Dave

you shouldn't have to take the hard lines off to replace the calipers. The rubber brakeline should have enough flex to move the caliper out of the way.

I'll go after it tonight. There are hard lines connected to the caliper. I've never seen that before. D

Yeah- It's me again... I still dont see how to remove the caliper without disconnecting the hard pipes. see attached images. the hard lines are wrapped around the bottom of the strut. If I start muscling them around I'm afraid I'll break them. Take a look. Dave

Neither have I, except where the flexible hose was fitted in such a way that allowed movement.

The pictures you have posted are identical to those in Haynes which says not to disconnect the lines. I have looked at a Volvo publication which does say that the caliper has to be removed, after taking out the lines.

Sorry, but it lookslike you are going to have to takethem out or run a serious risk of breaking them.

Bill- that's what confused me, looks like I have to disconnect them. The double lines travel up and down with the wheel, then attach to rubber, then back to hard lines. Dave

BillofDurham and others- Guess I made a mountain out of a molehill- the dual hard lines (brass) moved out of the way without any problem. I was just concerned with breaking/linking them.

So... Front disc, '89 240 (No ABS). Got the caliper out of the way, got the 10mm disc hold down bolts out, couple of taps and the disc was free! or was it? It is totally loose, rocking around just fine, but- THE DAMN THING WILL ONLY MOVE 3/8 OF AN INCH! I can't get the disc off. Push, pull, push pull... pry bar(s) on either side, on one side, I can't get the disc off. Is there something inside on the hub that could be binding. Jeeze!!

Thanks for your charity- Dave

It should come off. Nothing else holds it on there.

Tech, others-Well, with the help of my BIG prybar, I muscled bothfront rotorsoff. Incredible. I've never had such difficulty removing brake rotors with any of the non Swedish cars I've ever owned. Maybe the rotors that came off were line to line with the hub dimension. If anyone has had these just "pull off" I'd like to hear it. Dave

They usually just slide off. Maybe a tap with a hammer to break the rust loose.
