Default gear shift light

Hi folks,

A supposedly simple job is more complicated than I thought. I'm trying to replace the shifter light bulb on my wife's 1993 940 automatic. I got down to the rubber/plastic sheet that surrounds the shifter, but I cannot get it off. I can snap the shift plate out of position and slide it down, but it won't come off with gentle pulling. Didn't want to force the issue and break anything. So, I thought I would ask here. Anybody ever remove that shift plate before? Photo attached. Thanks.

I replace these, actually I ask my wife to do it(little fingers), by just pulling the bulb out, then sticking in the new bulb from underneath... This way I never mess with the shifter.

Couldn't find anything by pushing my fingers in the gear shift slot. Only felt a wall of plastic. May have to remove all the paraphernalia and go in from the opposite (distal) side.
