PS and Coolant Leaks on 1995 940
HELLO.... I'm a member on another forum for MY vehicle, so I wont be a "post and go" kinda person. I'll stick around. I know how it is.
My friend has a Volvo. What model? I dont remember. To be honest, I cant even remember if its a coup or sedan or what. ANNNYWAY... Its leaking. Probably coolant. Just wondering if there are any popular reason that this happens to steer me in the right direction when/if I fix his car.
I am not at all familiar with these and I am just looking for a point in the right direction. I haven't seen the car since he mentioned the leak yet, but I want to know going in if there is a common fail point.
Here is the front of his car (I dont know if it helps at all...)
And here is what he told me:
"Hose for my powersteering pump that goes from the rack to the pump is leaking"
"I think I got a coolant leak too. Coolant is always low when I fill up saw little bubbles coming out from behind a nut thats right on the water pump."
Any ideas? Thanks!

Sound pretty clear to me. Hose from pump to rack leaks (psf) and there is a water pump leak.
It looks like he as a '90 740 GL. Likely a 16 valve motor in it. In '87 all of the black grills were turbo. I'm not sure if the water pump is behind the timing belt on those cars or not. He can give you the VIN and you can run a vin check on Volvo's site or AutoCheck to tell you which motor it has then look for repair instructions from there.
BTW, we usually try to help everyone, even if they never come back.

He might know what motor is in it. I'll ask him when he gets out of work.

There are three things exclusive to the 90 740: the width of the grill, the lines on the hood and the size of the "L" filler strips between headlight and grill/bumper. It's a one off thing. In 91, they made the grill smaller to accomodate wider headlight assemblies with built in fog lamps. For the lowly 740 w/o fogs, the filler strip needed to be wider. As the hood lines are inline with the edges of the grill...and the grill became narrower....the hood lines changed as well. So...it is much more common to see a 90 model with the later setup simply because of availability. There just aren't many 90 only hoods out there pristine enough to swap. And...the egg crate grill is indicative of a turbo...although those get swapped around often. Compare the front end above w/ a known 90 740...
