Harmonic balancer came apart...
While cruising along at 60mph the rubber on the harmonic balancer on my '92 na 940 came apart. My wife said the car just stopped running. The hb is wedged into the lower timing belt cover.
Seems to be a straightforward repair.
But is there a possibility of damage to the engine? Possible timing issues?
I haven't looked under the timing cover yet.

So many harmonic balancer looked like this...2 pieces. It wore a huge groove in the lower timing cover.
My wife and daughter share this car....probably couldn't hear anything over the loud exhaust ( its rusted out between the o2 and the cat)

As i was working on this i discovered the insulation on the wiring for the iac, tps and starter was melted.
So now im in the process of switching starters...again...the reman starter i bought and installed looks like this. That strap from the motor to the solenoid in white and not attatched. I don't know if the problem started there but something happened somewhere.
It might well have been what caused the car to quit.

Ouch! Not good. Something caused these wires to melt--probably some overheating or a minor fire in the past. Normally1992 don't not suffer from bad wiring. These wires should be repaired or better replaced. I wonder what other wiring is similarly damaged?
It runs...from my parts car I pulled the starter, crankshaft pulley and timing belt. From my tool box i pulled some electrical tape.
When I pulled the old belt the camshaft "sprung" back into its "natural" position...and then i was able to line everything up and put on a new belt.
The fire damage to the insulation apparently didn't break any of the actual wiring.
So it's back up and running at 328,000 miles.

What did you do about replacing the KEY that prevents the crank pulley from rotating on the end of the crankshaft? The bolt alone is NOT ENOUGH!! If you were able to buy the key, please tell me where you got it.
I didn't have to buy a key. It was not damaged.
This car still runs... with the wiring on the IAC still taped up. Next oil change will be at 355k.
I've got a spare iac from the junkyard. Probably where I would look for a key if I needed one.
