Default Help Identifying 1986 Volvo

Hey guys, I appreciate any help in advance.

The trunk has, "240 DL" badges, the title says "240" on it, but the riveted plate on the passenger wheel well in the engine compartment reads, "244 GL."

I would have went with 240 DL but there is no such thing as far as I can tell. Any parts system I check, there is a 240, and a 244 GL, but no plain-jane 240 DL.

So, I don't even know the displacement of this engine, and didn't really need it until now. I'm guessing it's either the 2.0 or 2.3L. I've done a lot of miscellaneous stuff to it like tie rods, wheel bearings, ignition coil and a clutch as of late (PITA).

Anyways, I'm needing to ID this thing because it's time for some real troubleshooting. Car won't start, then a week or two later drives great for a day or two, then won't start again.

I'm thinking fuel related but I can smell fuel so I dunno, my experience says either a fuel pump or relay works or it doesn't. Anyone had experience with a relay or pump being intermittent?

I've asked a ton of questions, but I really need to ID this car and start troubleshooting it's starting problems. Again, I appreciate any help in advance.

Thought I'd toss in a pic...

What does your VIN # tell you?

Of course someone may have changed the engine/some of the other components but as a start the VIN can tell you a lot about what's under the hood.

Happy wrenching!

Well a 240 and a 244 are the same thing. 244 is the 4 door version of the 240. But looking at it s a 240GL, or 244 GL, again since its a 4 door.

It should have a 2.3liter motor in it. And it looks like someone put a different front quarter panel on the car, since the bumper trim is missing and the red is a different color. DL Gl is basically the same exact car except in different trim, and possibly markets.

I would start with having a good look at two items: (1) the fuel pump relay, and (2) the 25-amp fuel injection fuse. The relay is a 1"x2" white plastic box mounted on the inside firewall just above the passenger's right foot. The fuse is mounted next to the headlight hi-lo relay on the left fender right behind the battery.

Looks like a normal 240 DL to me! The GL or Grande Lux is the upgrade from the DL. Normally has upgraded interior(leather) different wheels than the hubcaps you have on there and the big one is being the Sunroof!

Hey well alright, I appreciate the help.

As far as the front fender, it's the only fender that I waxed when I took that pic. I was showing someone how good the paint still was. I'm not sure what you mean by bumper trim missing... ?

I will check the relay and I will also check the VIN using the link above. At least now I can find manual.

I'm still curious as to why a 240 DL doesn't show up on any parts systems? None of my local part stores show a 240 DL and neither does Rock Auto where I usually do my first bit of research on parts.

On a side note - anyone put a 302 in one of these cars? I've heard of it being done and I've got a 302 H.O. sitting in my garage begging to be freshened up and slapped in there as probably a forever project. For now I'd like to get the sucker rolling again. Ice cold air, burn-ya-up heat and decent mileage.

Okay well I've got some work to do, thanks again for all the help.

Parts stores don't care about DL or GL. That's just the trim. They list them as 200, 240, 244, or 245. All the same as far as the parts houses are concerned. What's important is the engine, B230F probably, and fuel injection system, most likely LH-2.2.

For all intent and purposes you have a 240! and blue goose is right, the more important issue for parts look up would be what motor you have!
