how to disconnect 4th gear disengagement?
I have a '92 Volvo 940 that sometimes gets stuck in overdrive or 4th gear disengagement. Sometimes it's ok, and sometimes it is stuck when I turn the car on and won't turn off. The arrow light is lit up on the dash, and pressing the botton on the gear shift does nothing. It won't shift to 4th gear & I don't want to do over 50mph. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to disconnect it?
likely a bad relay, if it works sometimes, and sometimes not. should be a white square relay on the right side of the relay box behind the ash tray. as far as disconnectiong it, in order to have 4th gear, you have to get power to the solenoid on the transmission. only way to bypass the relay would be to put power directly to the solenoid, and then you'd need a switch so it didn't draw down the battery. you'd be much better off fixing it right.
Thank you! I readthru this forum that others had the same problem too. One guy said he just gave the dash a good whack. I recently replaced a fuse I thought possibly I knocked it loose in doing so....So I took out the ashtray and just wiggled the white box behind the fuses without even taking out the fuse tray. I have been running fine ever since & keeping my fingers crossed.
