Default How to get shift linkage back to "normal". 1991 740

I have all the reason to believe my linkage is not "in tune" so to speak.

I just finished up a grueling job with the trans kickdown cable, and I am almost positive I disturbed the "normal" positioning of the linkage.

The car will want to go forward in whatever gear I try. Park is not actually park as the car still wants to move forward. I was able to get it into park by turning the shifter linkage next to the trans, but it still I do not believe things are on the same page. It still does not engage reverse and there is no neutral, as the car will move forward in all gears when giving it gas.

How do I get everything proper again?
I think I have to drop the trans pan again, don't I?

It is a 1991 740 Turbo automatic wagon.

Default Thoughts anyone?

Responses are always welcome everyone; I am really looking for solid advice here. . . .

So... still here wondering why things are not making sense with this shifter crap.

The shifter will only go as far down as the 2 position. PRND21. It will not go into the 1 position at all. The car will not reverse at all, instead wishes to go forward, same with the neutral position. .

Park actually works as it should.

I initially thought it has to do with shift linkage, and because the car will not go into the 1 position, I still believe the same.

But, the reverse lights work when the shifter **** indicates "R", and the car starts only when the **** indicates P or N.

You screwed up something internally... you have to drop the pan again and look at the mechanism there... The shifter is just a handle connected to the rod inside that moves to the gears you select.

Well the linkage must be right because the car is in fact in park and i kept the pan off hanging to observe the locking plate mechanism and the gear inside that moves.

Based on this picture and the fact that the car will not move when pushed forward, I'd say that park is at least right...

But, it must still be off since the shifter no longer will go down past the 2 gear to 1.

I believe the shifter can be moved without the linkage in the pan moving, or the other way around.

is this right?
