How to tighten B21 alternator belt
Hi,
I am dealing with a 1980 Volvo 245 and the alternator belt keeps coming loose and squealing horribly. It is a 2.1 with just an alternator and power steering belt. I don't see the 10mm B230 adjusting screw on this older model
so I have been using a large flathead screwdriver to pry the alternator back to the belts tightest position and then quickly tightening the 13mm. I overtightened today and the whole bolt broke in half so now I have to get a new bolt and nut. I noticed there was no washer but is there suppose to be one? Also, I believe there could be a possibility the locking nut was crap and the engine vibration was loosening the nut thus the belt loosening and the squeal etc. Thoughts?
Thanks

you should also replace the rubber bushings that the alternator cradle pivots on, they wear out, cause the alternator to sit at a slight angle, which causes all sorts of belt issues.
