Default Injector puls on ALL 4 strokes/ first post

Hello ALL!!!

Let me start by saying that I am a VW tech that just bought a winter
1985-240-5 spd-wagen. I like the car but I have a few issues.
The car starts after MUCH work
SOMEtimes runs fine!!
Some other times it will run and then just DIE!!!

I have proper fuel psi and regulator works fine
I have 165psi compression on all 4
I also have PLENTY of spark (msd)
Timing was reset to the 12'+/- 2'
MAF works
NEW PLUGS/WIRES/CAP/ROTOR/COIL

while looking into spray pattern I installed a -noid light- into the connector for # 1 fuel injector
I saw durring cranking that the pules's were happening EVERY stroke!!!!
I compaired NOID #1 TO timing light #1
4 NOID flashes to 1 timing flash........?????
IS THIS A COLD START FUNCTION???
NORMAL????

CAN someone point me in the right direction??

DID VOLVO make ANY carb-ed cars??
will carb/mani bolt to my current head??

SORRY FOR SO MANY ?????'s
just starting this VOVLO thing

THANKS ALL!!!
Jp.

On the back side of the intake there should be a cold start injector. You really can't miss it. It sticks out from the back like straight back from the throttle body.

Also make sure the throttle body and idle motor is clean.

I will try to find out about the pulses tomorrow.

I think it uses a Crank sensor. It is easy to to find. It is on the top of the transmission. The plug mounts on the firwall.

volvos have continuous injection which means they fire even when intake valve is closed. This is normal. It is not timed to intake valve.

on an 85 there is no crank sensor, at least not on mine!!!

wojeepster, as for the continous injection

this is normal??
I DON'T know what to make of this then??
is it cold start only
full water temp too.

IF I have correct spark timing
AND MULTIPULE INJECTION/rev is normal
WHAT can be causing such a rich miss??

IS there a wiring diag of this vehical floating about??
BENTLY manual is on back order.
I removed complete harness from cabin and manually checked
found NO issues!!!

how interchangable are these ECU's???

THANKS for what we got going here!

The copmputers are very touchy Try to match all the numbers.

IS the O2 working normally?

How about the coolant temp sensor have you checked it yet?

A common problem with volvos is the fuel pump relay. Symptoms are the car just dies, sometimes it starts right up again sometimes you have to wait. Your relay is on the passenger side above their right foot. Peel back the carpet and you will see a large white relay. I do not know it this has anyting to do with your problem but if you tap it several times with your finger and it is the problem they usually start. Don't convert to carbs, once you get the hang of fuel injection you will love it! More power better gas milage.

Another idea, when it won't start unplug the air mass sensor. There is a wire clip that you depress and the wire connector just unplugs. Try to start again. Unplugging the airmass puts the car in "limp home mode" If is starts now and runs better you probably have a bad air mass sensor. You can get a used one cheap at www.car-part.com go to the page with the asterisk.

another idea check that accordian looking hose that runs from the throttle body to the air mass sensor sometimes they get a hole rubbed in them. this lets in unmetered air and they don't run so good then

Usually the only thing I have seen that makes them run rich is when the fuel pressure regulator is bad and the pressure is too high. What is your fuel pressure?

On the 1985 it might also be Brown or orange. Also look on it for the Date it was assembled. It should be stamped on the side.

Before I would go replacing the ecu lets try to eliminate the simple things first. I thought of another thing that could cause a car to run very rich. Check your coolant temperature sensor. Not the one for the gage the one that tells the ecu what the coolant temperature is. It has a great effect. If it is telling the ecu that it is 100 degrees below zero this could cause an over rich condition.

I did try that other ecu that I had did NOT do the trick.

I have messed with many VW's that run the same bosch electrics
same mafs
tps input signals
idle air motors
0-2's

CAN an ect cause a no start?
is it

TEMP-UP resistance UP
OR
TEMP -UP resistance DOWN

my issue is that I have a rich mis-fire

to the point that it will not start.
new plugs will be SAOKED I am talking drips of fuel
after 1 crank sesion (5 sec.)

You might want to remove the injectors and inspect them and make sure they aren't bad. Dumping to much fuel in when activated. Or on the other hand leaking when the car is off. Then causing the missfire when started.

I have had the rail off with the key on I have NO leakage

durring cranking I have 1 strong pulse and 3 week ones

it's like the cylinder that is firing works when it is told to
BUT
the other injectors appear to be back feding power when it is not the turn!!????

does the ingition module tell the fuel controller when to fire??
are they in series or do they run parallel???

HALL WINDOW--ignition computer--fuel computer

OR

HALL WINDOW----ignition pc
\---fuel computer

I have NO idea what is the issue here and

ANY other known isues with these volvos would be great

AGAIN THANKS FOR THE HELP.

Jp.

The 3 injectors might just be clogged. If one flows good then sounds like the other 3 are weak/bad.
The computer tells the injectors when to fire by pulsing ground signal to them.

Have you tried starting with air mass meter unplugged? This puts computer in limp home mode and if it runs better unplugged than when it is plugged up you have a bad amm. I also agree with tech injectors should be the same. Yours are clogged or varnished up. Clean inj first.
