I just posted this in an existing thread but want to make sure it gets out there, so here it is again.


I'm about to start on inner and outer tierod replacement and was looking at the inner tierod and did not see any flat areas to get a wrench on to remove the tierod from the rack. Is this an original tierod from Volvo? I have determined that I have a CAM rack and also saw a post on another site that said you need to specify either a male or female thread.

Looking for a little insight on this matter.

My replacements had flats cut into them so I removed the old round ones with a pipe wrench and installed the new ones like normal.

 

Thanks! A few more questions here. Are the originals peened in place, or is there a locking tab, or is it just good old torque and Locktite that keeps them in place?

I also saw where there are two different thread sizes available for the CAM rack: 14mm and 18mm. Is there some way of determining this before taking them off?

And one more: How do you counter torque the steering rack when loosening the tie rods?

No pins in mine, and it really wasn't enough force for me to feel the need to counter torque the rack. The ball joint ends should have flats however.

As for the size you will need to know the brand rack you have, also will want to pay attention to the lengths of the tie rods.

To determine whether you have a ZF rack or Cam rack most 240's had Service Plates (or labels) to designate the type of rack. 1978-79 the plate was on the door pillar. On 1980-93 the plate was on sheet metal between the grille and radiator (viewed by lifting the hood). Find the label of Steering gear (on the plate) and next to it will be a single digit code. 2, 4 & 5 indicate Cam racks, 3 indicates ZF rack.

 

OK, I'm still trying to make a firm determination as to what steering rack I have. Based on all research I've done, I have a CAM rack: the boot diameter where it attaches to the inner tie rod is roughly 3/8" (no plastic grommet to attach to) and all online research for my year point to a CAM rack. So, my final question is which CAM rack do I have? The one that receives 14mm or 18 mm threaded ball joint? I have looked for all possible locations of the fabled information plaque and there is none on my car. Will it just take removing the tie rod from the rack and measuring or is there another option?

One other question is, do I need to apply counter torque on the steering rack when loosening the tie rod? I have read 2 schools of thought and nothing that's conclusive.
