Red face Installing headlight switch

Our '83 240's headlight switch died. I bought a replacement at my local NAPA store, wired it up, and it works great, as long as I'm holding the switch in my hand.

But...how to install? It's a cylindrical switch, just like the old one. It fits into a round receptacle behind the dashboard...but it's a tight fit. If I could somehow get behind there with both hands, I could push like mad to expand the receptacle to squeeze this in. As it is, this just doesn't quite get in there, so not enough of the shaft is there to hold onto the **** (unless I take off the front plate)--and it just flops around, as there's nothing to hold the switch in place.

Anyone know what I need to do to get this to fit in there?
thanks in advance, and Happy Thanksgiving!

What about getting a Volvo switch from a junkyard? Vry cheap and correct. The NAPA is obviously not right...

Default From the Swedish Ministry of Silly Mechanics comes the answer

Duh! Answered my own question.

The old switch had literally fallen apart, leaving the part of the housing that is held by the nut behind the **** still in place.

I just had to unscrew that nut, drop out the remains of the switch, and put it back in.

Twenty-four years does take its toll on my car...and my skills! NAPA switch works fine.
