Unhappy intermediate shaft wows

I have a manual 81 240dl just the other day the car died at a stop light, my wiffe was driving so not sure what sounds it made if any. checked for fuel supply and the mechanical pump isnt delivering, pulled the pump and it's fine(still pumps when dun by hand) had some one crank it over while i watched inside the slot, it appears that the intermediate shaft is not spinning. where do i start

shouldn't be too hard
maybe you should have left the belts on till you got the nuts loose?

Cam, intermediate shaft and crank ALL must be aligned...all three marks are rather easy to see if you know where to look.

just wondering
how does a person know
if the # 1 is TDC on compression stroke,
other than chance being 180 deg out ?
do you have to take the valve cover off,
or can you peek in thru the oil fill ?

I always position it prior to taking off the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover. There is a mark on the pully that you align with a mark on the timing belt cover. I believe the mark on the cover is marked 0 deg TDC.

ok
after thinking more about it
if the camshaft pulley has its mark lined up
then it is on compression for # 1,
and if the rotor is pointing a # 1,
and the mark on the intermediate pulley is lined up,
then you just have to bring # 1 piston to TDC
by lining up the mark on the crankshaft pulley,
and all should be well.
Have a good one.
Les
