I've seen this pattern of holes drilled on the passenger side of the center console on other 740's. Does anyone know what mounted there? Was it some type of factory option or just good ole custom butchering? Thanks

 

probably was for the handset of an old cellular phone, back when they were the size of a suitcase. the phone itself was likely in the trunk, and just the handset in the passenger compartment. Mercedes 300E's from the same era came standard with these.

 

That makes sense. I thought it might have been a cup holder...but you'd have to reach quite a bit to use it.

 

Or perhaps a fire extinguisher?

 

Considering how some people burn their tires......quite possible.

 

i've seen those exact same sort of holes on numerous cars of that era, and they were for a old school cellular telephone handset. not this exactly, but something like it.
