Default K-Jetronic: any major downsides?

I've owned and loved several 240s (got a '90 wagon, and my son has a really nice '83 manual wagon), but all have been later models with the later fuel injection system.

I'm wanting something for fun, and had thought about an Amazon, but I can't find one that's not a rust bucket. Lately, I've been taken with the '75-7'8 (yes?) 242s. I like the look: the round headlights, the roofline, etc.

Having never dealt with K-Jetronic, I was wonderng: are there any major downsides? Are there any caveats about early 240s in general?

I'd love to find one in one of the funky earth tone colors they used to do! There's currently one on eBay like the one below.

Thanks!

Make sure the ones you buy run and run good.

If they sit to long the fuel system seizes up and there isn't a replacement sold anymore.

There are rebuild kits avalible but most people have no luck rebuilding.

Is an upgrade to the later FI system realistic?

I couldn't say for sure about the upgrade, but if the system works, don't touch it. I've had two Air-Cooled VW's with the K-Jetronic and it's heavenly. It does tend to run a little rich sometimes but it is very forgiving of vacuum and EGR leaks. Very reliable. The only time they run bad is when some damn dirty hippie VW mechanic or hapless DIY'ermesses with them. Run a couple bottles of injector cleaner, make sure your ignition system is in order and set the idle speed. DON'T mess with anything else (CO or mixture screws, fuel pressures). The adjustments have caps on them for a reason. DO check for cracked or old-looking/feeling lines as vapor lock is a common problem on this sytem in the summer heat.

Hmmm.........good to know. I had a '78 Westphalia camper; maybe it had K-Jetronic? That thing ran like a dream, and for a van, was actually a blast to drive.

After owning several CIS SAAB 900 8 valve turbos and an AUDI Ur QUATTRO '83 and my 84' 240 turbo Intercooler all Ive ever added to them is Berryman Chemtool B 12 to the fuel tank without any issues, just keep an eye on any vacuum leaks on the bellows and an annual fuel filter change,
