Default M47 5th speed housing won't come all the way off

I am trying to replace the leaking seal on the shift linkage where it goes into the 5th speed "cabin" on the back of the m47 tranny (car is a 91 240). For whatever reason, I can move the cabin housing about a quarter of an inch but then it won't move any more. It'll be so much easier to get to the linkage seal if I could have that housing out from under my car. Has anyone done this before? I have removed driveline, tailfin, and rear plate of the transmission (the seal does not go in the rear plate, it is in the "cabin" housing. The bottom shaft has a rather thick washer that was bolted in. When I removed that bolt is when I got the housing loose, but only a bit.

Any advice would be appreciated. It is driving me nuts.

Default Update on M47 tranny leaking at shift linkage

Sweet success. Found a great manual at volvowiring.com. Turns out there are two M47 transmissions, which I did not know. Pretty simple to pull off the housing with a cheap gear puller. I was able to pull that 5th speed bunkhouse off and the seal came out a lot easier on my work bench than trying to get it off while on my back under the car. I've put the new seal in, and as soon as my gasket set gets here I and I can recall how to get everything back together, I think I've fixed a pesky leak. What a job. I don't find many write ups on how to fix that leak, but I am here to say that it can be done without removing the transmission from the car.
