Default Major 740 help!

I just got a 1990 740 Turbo....

IT starts and runs like new, but starts smoking very very badly. It leaks oil all around the turbo as well.

The interior is trashed, seat coverings are shot, dash is shot, headliner is nice, but the power sunroof doesnt work. The motor clicks and tries to move, but the tracks are all broken.

The pass. side window is stuck up, all others work sweet. It drives like a new one, has the 16" alloy wheels, which are perfect, except for 1 missing cap.

Blower motor works, but A/C comp is unhooked, Im assuming it is locked up.

All switches and heaters work.

As you can guess, Ididnt pay much for it. $350.00

1. where can I find some good interior parts, basically an entire interior, minus seat frames, and dash.
2. How to tell which turbo it has, and where t ofind a new one.
3. has 150,000 miles, is it worth fixing?

For the interior try Salvage yards.

The compressors are known to lock up.

Check and see if the sunroof motor screws came loose.

Possible the switch is bad. Swap switch with one of the others in the car and see if it works. Or open the switch and clean contacts really good and try again.

For the turbo Look on the front of it there might be an aluminum plate. That is usually the mittsubishi turbo's.
Most of the 1990's and newer had the mitsu. turbo's. I will bet that it is bad.

In my opinion it would be worth fixing but that is just me.

No plate on the turbo, must be a garrett.

The turbo must have a blown seal, as it passes oil into the exhaust chamber, and leaks out the turbo. Ya cant run it more than 2 minutes or it smokes too bad.

Took the sunroof out today, and it was a broken metal track, I removed it and ordered a new one at my local Volvo Dealer.

Also, found out that the Alloy rims are like $770ea to replace, Im glad mine are 100% perfect!

The engine purrrs when I run it, tranny shifts beautifully.

The motor works on the sun roof, gears all turn, but it was jammed o nthat broken track.

Im going to de-grease the engine tomorow, and pull the turbo, any pointers on that?

How much would interior parts be from my dealer?
Dash cover, door panels, head liner (destroyed it when we pulled the sunroof), pass. side kick board, and carpet.

The turbo isn't reall all that bad. You should be able to remove the 4 nuts after all the lines and slide it off and leave the manifold on the car.

The Interior parts are really expensive from the Dealer.

Finally got it off!

We took the for bolts off, but one bolt on the exhaust side wouldnt budge, so we had to cut the bolts off the catylitic converter (which was full of oil) And flip the turbo to cut the bolt off the back of it.

The turbo was cooked, the shaft was broken. The return line from the Turbo was 100% clogged with gunk. It ate the bearings out and the shaft broke. The nut on the oil pan doesnt look like it had ever been removed. Where can I find a good rebuilt turbo? This on says somethinf on the front of it.. .Something ".Industries "

How fast were these cars stock? Were they reliable?
We took the oil fill off and the cam and lifters look okay, we are going to pull the valve cover and replace the gasket.

If it doesn't have a Mittsu. Plate on it then it is a garret. Also in might not be a stock one.

Search E-bay and check in the local area for shops that rebuild them. Some will do it for like $300.00 to 400.00.

The turbo car are pretty quick.

Took it t oa local shop, he looked at it and said it was deemed non-rebuildable. He told me for 575 he could get me another one tomorrow. So I did that.

Let us know how it goes.

I would ask for the old one back and keep it and try to track down parts for it.

I have only ever heard of them refered to as a garret. I will try to see if that is a special one or not.
I never really paid all that much attention while changing one.

I know that the Mittsu.'s you can swap the center section out of a 850 turbo into it.

So you never know you might find another one you can use parts and fix yours as a spare.

Got the new turbo this afternoon. It says Garrett on the front, but not AiResearch. Oh well, they shipped my original one off as an exchange.
