Motor Mount Renewal Quick Questions

Motor Mount Renewal Quick Questions
I I am replacing both motor mounts on my '85 240 DL tomorrow and have two qucik questions.
1: A tips guide on Swedish Bricks recommends unbolting the motor mounts from the front axle, then jacking up the vehicle, then jacking up the engine and proceeding to remove the mounting brackets and replace the mounts. Is this the correct procedure? It seems to me that jacking up the vehicle first - then unbolting the mounts from the front axle, then lifting the engine would be the right procedure.
2: The same tips guide says not to lift the engine using the oil pan. But Haynes says to lift the engine under the sump pan? But I have also read that the engine can be supported with the transmission? Where is the best place to put the jack to lift the engine?
3: is it necessary to remove the top mounting bracket to replace the mounts? It appears to me that the mounts could be fitted into the top brackets without removing them. But perhaps I will run into that as I do the job....
Thanks for the advice and help.
