So my 1988 240 is pretty much stock. I don’t have enough money to upgrade much stuff. But one thing I want to change out is definitely the muffler as mine is shot. I want to find a muffler that makes the car sound better as well as maybe up the performance even a little bit. I was wondering if anyone knew of any companies or mufflers that would suit my needs.

I installed a OEM replacement kit from FCP minus the muffler and installed a Thrush turbo muffler instead. Sounds pretty good, not obnoxiously loud or a fart can.

I recently got a 1987 244 and also had a shot muffler and wanted to make it sound better for cheap. What I ended up doing is cutting out the large rear muffler (there is a smaller one a little farther back and I only need one to pass VA inspection). I cut the rear muffler before it made a 90 degree turn to go towards the driver's side. I had to take off the tow ring on the passenger side, grind it down a little, and re-install it on the driver's side. Then I bought an 18 in. long resonator with a 2 in. inner diameter on either end from Autozone (8 bucks), a 2 in. exhaust clamp (4 bucks), and a new exhaust hanger (around 5 bucks but I had to modify it a little). Unfortunately, this wasn't long enough to reach all the way to the rear so tomorrow I'm gonna buy another resonator pipe and one more clamp for like 10 more dollars and cut off the flanged part of the pipe so it'll fit into the one there now.

If you have a wagon I can't promise that it'll work the same but I did it and it is super solid and inexpensive. The noise is perfect for me: not crazy loud but loud enough to sound pretty nice. I'm happy to help you out some more if you're interested.
