I'm a proud first time Volvo owner and have an 83 240 dl wagon. I noticed the other day that my overdrive only works when my car makes the bell and whistle noises when turning key to on position which it doesn't do everytime. I've read that the od sometimes takes a while to be able to engage but this problem seems to happen only when no bells upon turning on ignition. I also hear what seems to be a relay clicking in the cab but again not every time. Any suggestions would be helpful. Oh also my wipers and horn only work if you physically turn the key backwards slightly after starting, but I figured that this was just an old ignition that needed a little help finding center. Check the OD relay to see if it needs a little care. Run a soldering iron and some fresh solder around the back of it and that might fix your problem. If not you might need to replace it outright. It could also be an issue with the solenoid. Those go nad sometimes. They are pretty easy to replace though.

 

Where is this relay. I just got the car and haven't had time to get a manual. Is there a good manual?

 

It is under the centre of the instrument panel.

I have a problem with my OD too, my 83' 240DL is standard and it won't go into OD unless the tranny is good and warmed up (atleast 30 mins of driving) whats wrong? haha
