1987 240, on dash, blue warning light comes on and off. It is a box with a number 5 inside, can not find in owner's manual. Anyone have an idea?

 

Manual M46 (electronic OD cars) have the overdrive light on when the car is in 5th gear. I believe it's GREEN though...

 

It comes on most often in the morning when I am not in fifth gear, it never stays on long though. I guess I need to know if it is of concern and if so what needs to be done.

 

Obviously it's some electrical wiring malfunction.Do you have a functioning 5th gear? No other anomalies besides the light flickering now and then? It's a matter of examining the wiring under the shifter, it gets brittle and chafed after all these years... The switch itself may be bad.

 

Is the OD light on the Automatic Trans Blue?

 

On the 240(at least in 1990) the OD light for the auto is a orange arrow

 

yes, but an automatic is not a M46 stick shift.

tami, does your car have a 5 speed stick shift (thats an M47), or a 4 speed stick, plus an overdrive button for the '5th' ? not sure which version an 87 came with.
