Hey guys i'm new here. I'm new to volvos but nor working on cars. My wife inherited a 93 240 wagon from her dad and wants to get i back on he road. The front crank seal was leaking horribly. I replaced all 3 while I was there. he issue I have is:
New timing belt and tensioner...I cannot for the life of me get the tension tight on the right side(cam to intermediate gear) there is substantial belt play. The new tensioner sits flush to the block and everything is lined up as marked before disassembly.

ANY AND ALL HELP IS GREALY APPRECIATED!

 

Something must be off wth the parts you are using. How much a play is there? Is the belt may be too long? Is the tensioner taking up the slack? I can't think of anything else...

 

The tensioner is taking up slack and there's about 1/8 inch play maybe a touch more. I forgot to mention I also put the old belt on and ran into the same issue

 

Compare the new tension-er assembly with the old one. What's the difference.

 

So, with the old belt and tensioner you had 1/8 inch play as well? The tensioner should take up the slack when extended. It must be something simple we are overlooking--not too many elements here, belt, tensioner, 3 pulleys...

 

is either the camshaft or intermediate shaft not turning freely ?

 

there's two different timing belts and pulley sets depending on the age.... some have round teeth, some have flat square teeth, you have to use the belt that matches your pulleys. I *think* the round ones were later, but I could be wrong.

 

Both pulleys turn freely and the belt is round tooth. Also, both tensioners are identical. I will try to load a picture later.

 

Figured it out, when the new tensioner was on it sat flush until putting the belt back. There was a slight angle issue. All is well now. Thanks for he feed back!
