Default Newbie: '88 240GL in Australia - questions

Hi all,

New here, and new to Ovlovs (although my grandfather always drove 240s, so perhaps not . Recently bought an '88 240GL with M47 5 Speed manual and very happy with her. The B230F motor is running great since I replaced the dizzy cap and rotor, and fitted a K&N air filter.

I was just starting to get excited about the idea of turbocharging her but then I saw this thread: https://volvoforums.com/forum/nitrou...-b230ft-25272/

Can anyone suggest any cheaper/easier performance mods for this motor?

Also, she has one issue, being very hard to select reverse - I suspect some sort of clutch issue but would be interested to hear if anyone knows of a common fault with this setup. I can soldier on with it indefinitely - it is just necessary to switch the motor off to engage reverse!

Cheers!

well... anything is possible. go to turbobricks for more on turboing.
your tranny? hard to say without seeing it. a shop will tell you if it is clutch or the tranny itself. don't want to guess.

there are no cheap/easy performance mods. a turbo car has a higher volume fuel pump, different heads (sodium filled valves), different pistons (to lower the compression ration to prevent predetonation), bigger radiator, squeeze the intercooler into there... the best way to do it is to find a b230ft powered 740/760 and transplant nearly everything under the hood.

Volvo never used the M47 with a turbo as its not strong enough, the turbo manuals used the M46 4-speed plus overdrive.
