Default Not Starting? Any ideas?

I have an 89 240dl. I replaced the timing belt and oil seals a while back. I ran it a few times. I left it running for a little while and heard a weird noise and i shut it off (sounded like maybe the fan was hitting something) since then it will not start. I replaced the battery, starter, and ignition coil. Any idea what could be causing this? I checked all the fuses and relays and even disconnected the after-market anti-theft device that was installed. The timing belt is still intact (and was put on fine. as i've done this for a number of other people i know with volvo b230s) and the starter makes a noise like it's going to start and it won't kick over.

Any help, ideas, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

Wow...that was 4 months ago. Assuming the cam shaft is turning when you peek into the oil fill while someone tries to crank it, the belt isn't broken. What you describe sounds suspiciously as if it isn't quite in time. Possibly it was at first and the tensioner was set properly or some suc. Worth investigating for sure.

So as long as everything turns with say the front timing cover off everything is fine timing wise?

I'll double check this ASAP. It's been sitting for several months because it's more of a project than anything. I own way too many vehicles and don't show them the love that they deserve. Well, I only have 3... But still. Can I post a video on the forum? Or a link to one?

Thanks,
Ben

Easy to post to youtube and inbed it here. No, assuming the camshaft is turning, it does NOT mean the timing is correct. It merely means the belt has not broken or slipped off.

Oh yeah. It could be off a tooth or something. (like maybe the tensioner broke.) I'll make and post that video in the morning.

Thanks,
Ben

Default Timing belt

After putting a new timing belt on should the marks stay lined up? Or are they all thrown off after you run it?

Thanks,
Ben

well, you'll have to spin the engine around by hand til the marks are in place to verify they are lined up. its 2 turns of the crank for one turn of the intermediate and cam shafts.

I did not put back the timing belt cover on mine and the timing belt was hitting this metal plate that with the timing belt cover on it would be pushed back away from the edge of the belt...it sounded as if the fan was hitting something or a piston was hitting a valve.....the bolt that pushed that metal plate back is the "middle one"....not the top left one but the middle cover bolt...

realizing your year...it has a plastic piece and not a metal one like mine....but it is the same crap.

Timing is fine I doubled checked everything. Since I heard a strange noise before it stopped running can i assume it is the distributor? WOrking on the video. Made it on phone. going to upload it soon

Okay... well, we've got some things out. Timing appears to be good. Let's start at the top.

1) does it still make this noise while you are trying to start? Or did this happen only when you had the engine running last time?
2) What does the starter sound like? Does the starter engage & jam up? Or does it engage, and the motor turn over, but not start? I figure we can rule out the starter as you replaced it... but it still may be a clue here.
3) How did this after market anti-theft devise work? This wild-card may do something strange and behave in an unanticipated way when disconnected. It would just be nice to rule that out.

Just some ideas that may be helpful.
