Default Not sure what the deal is...

I admittedly don't know much about cars at all, and I've been having nothing but trouble with my 240. It now decides in the middle of my drive that it doesn't want to accelerate anymore. I can't describe the sound I'm hearing too well- it's just a low, quiet grinding. I can't go anything over the speed I'm currently at, and if I slow down at all, that's the new speed I'm stuck at. If I was going 50 and went down to 45, I'm stuck at 45 now. Pulling over, turning off the car and starting it again fix it long enough to get me home. And of course, it works just fine when anyone who can help me with the issue is in the car.

Any ideas what it might be? I'm very close to getting rid of it.

if you don't know anything about cars, take it to someone who does. we can't work magic based on vague descriptions like this.

Auto or Manual transmission? Does the engine change speeds without change in road speed ("motorboating")? Any check engine light or other symptoms? is there an odd sound to the muffler like somethings clogged? Does it sound/run normal when in neutral? When was the last time it had routine maintenance? oil change, air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires etc? Agree with Pierce that more info is needed.
