Hi I am the owner of a 1994 940 non turbo with the Bosch ignition system. The car has almost 215k with a slew of problems because the other owners didn’t take care of it right. From what I can tell it either has the majority of the original parts on it or the recent owners bought everything OEM (most components stil have the Volvo stamp or Bosch label still)



It’s my daily driver so I can’t afford to take the car apart and lol to see where the actual leak is coming from just so I can put it back together and get to work. I just don’t have the time specially working night shift at a diesel shop.

when i originally got the car the owner said it was just a valve cover gasket. I replaced that but the leak never stopped but it was never that bad until today (3/4 months later) so I pushed it aside and repaired the parts that were messing with the drivability (IAC,MAF, Flame trap, vacuum lines cleaned out the oil trap can and theEGR and some suspension work and I just got a new TPS today that I was going to install this weekend)

I also believe I have a blown head gasket but not the usual, I believe mine is coming from the combustion chamber and keeping my coolant system pressurized.

The oil leak appears to be coming from behind the timing cover above the water pump. See picture. So seeing how I can’t take it apart to find out where it is and put it back together to make it to work I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the leak is so I can take apart my car and fix it in one go instead of having. To take it apart. Wait on parts potentially missing work and then putting it back together.

and if I could get a list of all parts that I should go ahead and fix/replace while the timing cover is off.

 

Could be the camshaft seal. Take the timing cover off and have a look.

If the cam seal is leaking I'd replace the intermediate and crankshaft seals as well. Change the timing belt and probably the tensioner. Might change the water pump as well.

I'd only use Volvo seals.

 

if its not the camshaft seal, its probably the valve cover near the camshaft seal. what he said, take off the top half of the timing cover and it should be pretty evident. if the oil is everywhere up there, clean it off with some gunk foaming engine cleaner, then run it for a few mins and watch where it comes out.
