Hi, I am a newb when it comes to manual transmission Volvo's but what is the button on top of the gear shifter for a 4-speed manual transmission? I am assuming it is overdrive but it doesn't work. How do you engage it?

When you are under way and in FOURTH, and you wanna go to fifth, step on the clutch and push the button on the shifter. A green light should light up on the dash, and you shold be in FIFTH gear, RPM should drop, etc.

 

All right, I took it for a drive, and did what you suggested but the OD does not engage. Should I be following the post that Fresheadies had posted? And the info from this link? https://volvoforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34866

BTW, what kind of transmission does my car have?

The other post has to do with the auto transmission which is different. Do you ever see the OD light come on after pressing the button? If not check/replace fuse 11. If it still doesn't work you'll need a volt meter and a wire diagram.
