Default Planning for strut replacement

Well I'm planning for and getting parts for a strut cartridge replacement on my 89 740GL with 320K miles on it. There doesn't seem to be much info on this so I am seeking tips from those who have done the job. So of the info I have seen has the cartridge replaced with the strut still mounted (lower section) on the car. So what methods have been used and what parts do you usually replace. I'm thinking I'll be doing all of the top end parts on this installation. So any advice would be helpful. Thnks

If you have access to air tools and a genuine strut compressor (few do) I generally prefer to totally separate the assembly from the car. Mainly because I have a deep seated distrust of the "C" clamp spring compressors. I've had bad luck w/ the sets sold to individuals; they slide down hill. Still, I've done many a 240 by simply removing the clamps holding the brake lines to the body for extra latitude, sway bar and loosening the strut top mounting bolts and pulling the entire assembly down and out. I've haven't done it that way w/ a 7 series but can't think it would be much different...here's the pics of the 240 for reference...

The good news for me is, with lowering, shorter springs, I no longer need a spring compressor!

Thanks a friend of mine has a snap on spring compressor (floor mount type) so if I remove the assembly it's no problem to pull the spring. It looks like the 240 is a little different but shouldn't be a problem. I'll probably replace ball joints and tie rod ends while I'm at it. I assume I'll have to replace all of the components on top of the strut assembly. I'll continue to sort out the parts. Thanks for the info.
