So you got the wrong filter, happens all the time! Just wash out the old filter with some solvent and put it back--all it is is a screen. Or you can go search for another filter if you must. The transmission you have is a AW70 or AW71L, at least should be... And, yes, the same Japanese transmission was used in the old RWD Toyota Supras, Cressidas, etc.

There is an ID plate on the side of the tranny. Remember I mentioned your tranny looked like it had been removed/SWAPPED recently....
AW70 is for non turbo. AW71 is for Turbo. Highly doubt there is much difference down there between the two, though.
Yeah Toyotas used the same tranny. Maybe look for Toyota parts suppliers if you are that desperate. Otherwise, yeah, your old one shouldn't even have been bad enough to need changing. Re-use.

unfortunately, transmission filters, gaskets wont work for a aw70 or aw71 The gaskets fell apart when i removed the transmission filter. so i cant put it back together. and there are 2... a plate thing comes out when the filter comes out, and there is a gasket on either side. no one had the correct part in stock. its a special order everywhere. Anyone know if there is a transmission ID tag or something? it looks like a
A43D transmission.
A43D transmission.

Ooh thanks for the pic with the ID tag location!! I'll check it tomorrow. Too frustrated tonight.
Here is my filter on the left, aw70/aw71 filter on the right.
I did some more digging, looks like the previous owner got this tranny from a turbo volvo. I wonder if the engine is from a turbo also? Hmmm.

the volvo turbo uses a AW71 which is a heavy duty version of the AW70. the two are completely interchangable. AW is Aisin Warner, which is Toyota's tranny group.
if it was a Volvo transmission, it should have had a sticker on this side, same as the one revolv pasted:
maybe it does, under all that grease?
