So recently I bought a 240 Wagon for $300 and all it needed af first to run was a new battery. The purpose of buying was to learn manual and learn the ins and out of fixing up a car. But expectedly more problems have arisen. I ended up doing a complete rear brake overhaul and then car drove fine for a while until recently. The car won't start. It turns over and will make a "wub wub" or two before it dies. I have a new battery so that shouldn't be the issue. I was thinking maybe spark plugs or alternator need replacing? I'm just not sure. One issue that pointed me to the fuel filters needing replacement was that the car will rip through gas unnaturally fast even though there is no leak. If anyone with more mechanical experience than me can leave any comment or clues that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

First thing I tell anyone to do on a used vehicle they just got is do a tune up, not matter if they got it from a dealer or private sale.
My idea of a tune up is:
Spark plugs and wires
Distributor cap and rotor
Oil change and filter (which I see you have oil and a filter)
Fuel filter
Air filter
Inspect belts
Put tires with most tread on the back

As for the starting/running issue:
Changing the fuel filter would help with a starting and running problem.
The alternator should be putting out at least 13.5 volts. Any less than that, you have a bad alternator. Try pulling the alternator off and going to an auto parts store to have it tested.
If the alternator is good, but the battery loses voltage, you have a parasitic draw somewhere. That can be anything from a switch to a relay to a module. If you have one of those, good luck!

So far I've changed oil, oil filter, air filter, battery, battery terminals, and a rear brake overhaul. My main hold back at the moment has been money for the project though.

It's a 1984 Volvo DL (or 245).
