Possibly buying 740 Turbo sedan, have questions
Hi all,
Was just tooling around my local craigslist and found a 740 Turbo manual sedan with 182k miles for sale about 3 hours away from me for $2500. On the whole this looks like an excellent deal - the car is very clean inside and out, the owner has taken care of it very well. My biggest question is that the owner states it was equipped with Turbo+, however from what I can find online is that Turbo+ was only a 780 thing. How would I be able to tell if this car actually had that installed? In one of the pictures the car seems to have a gauge on the passenger side near the glove box, is that part of this system or an aftermarket addon I should be worried about?
The only thing the owner says it needs is an AC recharge. If its just that, why doesn't he do it? Is it just laziness or could it be a sign of a bigger problem with the compressor or lines or something.
Other than that, what other Volvo specific things should I look at if I go check the car out? Obviously I'd check the regular used car buying items like rust on the underbody/wheel wells/doors and belts, but never having bought a Volvo of this era before I don't know what else to look for.
Thanks in advance,
CrzRsn

The Turbo+ was standard on the 780 and an option on other turbos, so this car may have it. How can you tell? Hm, good question! I don't know if you can tell by outward appearance. The + gives 20 extra HP, and you can tell by the way they drive if you knew how a normal turbo acted. Can the seller prove it? It should have an owner's manual booklet, other paperwork, not that that would prove anything...
A gauge near the glove box is not OEM. But may be not anything to worry about... The turbo+ has no external extra gauges.
When a seller says "it needs a recharge", he leaves out the "and you need to find out why the refrigerant escaped in the first place" part, and then fix whatever else is wrong. It is a closed system and if it is in good shape with no leaks it should not need a recharge.
You left out the year of this car. It was available 1984-1991 and there are peculiarities in the range... For $2,500, it better be a helluva nice car.
