Questions about a 84 240 GLT
Hello,
I just recently found myself without a car, and I have been browsing the newspapers looking for a new (used) car. I came across a listing for a 84 240 GLT that needs a little work. Well the little work part of it is a new headgasket. The current owner says it blows out white smoke like london fog. I hope that the head gasket is only leaking coolant into the cylinders, and not the oil pan.
Now I have quite a bit of expierence chaning headgaskets ( I have had a Omni GLH-T, and numerous VW's), and from the pictures of the engine compartment that I have seen, it does not seem to be that big of a deal. Am I correct on this assumption?
Now I talked the guy down to $300 for the car, would that be a decent price for a car with a blown headgasket? I am going to take a look at this car this weekend, but from what he told me, everything else on the car is in perfect shape.
The reason I'm looking at these cars is that when I was in college I dated a girl who had a 242 Turbo wagon. I loved that car (she was prety nice too), and anytime we went someplace, I always would ask if I could drive it (it didnt hurt that her dad used to own a sport tuning shop).
So that's my story. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

RE: Questions about a 84 240 GLT
I take it that 84 was a conversion year?
Is the full fuel injection bosch too? I really do not know much about these cars (mechanical aspect), but I sure know they are fun to drive.
If I do get the car, what else should I worry about replacing when I have the top half of the engine torn apart (other than the standard timing belt)?
I will keep everybody posted.
Thanks

Try to have the head checked for cracks.I would also replace the sensors in the head.If the gasket is blown you don't know how hot it got.You might be able to see once you start pulling apart.I have seen them get so hot the timing cover melted to the head. You might also want to do the rest of the front engine seals. That will make sure there is no oil leaks from the front of the engine. Also replace the thermostat.
Thats all I can think of at the moment. If I think of more I will let you know.
