Default Quirky Speedometer...

My name is Brandon. After reading some of the post I'm convinced ya'll are the ones to help me. I'm new to you guys so any help would be appericated.I have a 740 wagon, non-turbo & for that matter not many bells or whistles. The speedometer for some reason will bounce on occasion even when idling & then go out. The odometer even quits working. Although, it may decide to return while I continue driving. Then sometimes the opposite happens. I'm driving along & boomthegauge dies. This doesn't occur all of time. That's what confuses me.The rest of the gauges seem to work perfect.I thought it was possibly the speed sensor, but after reading some of the post, I then thought it maybe the gauge might be going out. Now, I'm nomechanic by any means, but could it be a short in the gauge or wire?If you got any ideas I'd be open to them. I don't want to start replacing pieces for no reason. Please help.

Thanks
