Default Random stalling on highway

Hello everyone

I have a 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler Sedan and when I am on the highway traveling my car becomes unresponsive to the throttle then stalls. When this begins to happen I will attempt to accelerate and there will be no response until there is a small acceleration. I will then pull over and try to start my car and it will putter out until it stalls out. This usually happens when I am on the highway. It died 10 minutes away from my house and I waited 10 minutes for the car to cool down and it worked. I have replaced my crank sensor, relay for the fuel pump, bellow. I checked the fuel pump and the pressure is fine. I recently had the throttle body cleaned because when idling there is a slight rpm shake. I noticed the last time this happened the air conditioning was on while I was on the highway.

Thank you please help I want to get this taken care of and keep my Volvo on the road!!! I am at 305,000 miles!!! THANK YOU!!!

I was gonna say, CPS, then FI Relay, BUT, since you already did those, big hmmm! Most likely fuel pump, gets overheated, cuts out, cools later, works. This happens; fuel pressure may be fine now, a little later, not... But this, still just a guess. Not too many things can make these engines stall like that! Keep posting, we'll figure it out!

yep, time to start a new thread on the XC90 board. Be kind, it sounds like he may be in for a throttle body rebuild. :-)

DIYdad - simply use the forums drop down menu and select XC90 or the link breadcrumbs to go back to Volvo Vehicles and find the forum of choice. The "+ New Thread" button is on the top and the bottom of the page.

that's the best place to find contributors who know your model the best.

huh? the original post in this thread is talking about a 1990 740 Turbo wagon. Thats the cast iron 4 cylinder B230FT SOHC 'redblock' engine, with LH 2.2 fuel injection, and a very old school Aisin Warner AW71 transmission, rear wheel drive with a Dana 30 live axle rear end. These were the cars that earned Volvo the reputation of making tanks (the same basic setup was used in the 240, 740, 940, with or without turbocharging).

Noone mentioned an XC90 on this thread until you got here. an XC90 is a completely different car, with an alloy 'whiteblock' 2.9L I6, modern fully computerized motronics ECM, or maybe even a V8 depending on the year. The XC90 is a FWD/AWD drive setup with a transverse motor, virtually every single aspect of it is completely different other than the Volvo logo.
