Default Saab guy

Hey sorry to sound like a newb but I'm so damn confused with volvos. I'm a Saab guy (4th saab). But i'm getting sick of FWD and I'm now looking for something RWD so I thought, why not try the other side of sweeden! My questions for you guys is:
1. If you were to pick ONE turbo manual wagon what would it be?
2. Whats the strongest engine in the volvo line up? I'm looking for an 80s-early 90s car. In saab the strongest engines are B204/234. They can take like 600whp. I actually ran a holset hx35 on my 1999 9-3 with the stock internals @ 120k and made about 550+ WHP.
3. What are the limits on these cars stock wise? Rear Diff? Pistons? etc. I'm looking for a 350-400 RWHP car.

Sorry again to be a newb but Volvos have a crap ton of models. Saabs have like 4 with 2 engine options hahahahha
THANKS!!

well, in the later RWD family, there's the B230 family of 'red brick' 4 cyl engines in the 240/740/940's and the 6 cyl 'white block' in the 960, to be avoided unless you like complex and expensive.

the B230FT turbo in the 740 and 940T's were stock at 160HP and about 200 ft-lbs. stick shifts are fairly rare on these cars although they do exist, the AW70/71 series of toyota-based automatics that most later turbos came with are very sturdy transmissions. stock these things hold together for 250-400k miles or more if you take care of them. the best turbo engines were in the 94-95 last two years of 940T's, these had piston squirters to improve lubrication and cool the piston skirts.

over on the 'turbobricks' forum, you'll find a lot more tuners and tweakers, these guys easily get 250HP out of these engines and with a bit more work 350-400HP but it gets more and mroe expensive the higher you go, and if you go around actually USING that power you'll be rebuilding stuff regularlly. goes with the territory.

the ultimate power is to drop a small block ford or chevy in one of these, with a corresponding ford or chevy tranny. the standard rear end can probably hold it together up to around 300-350HP if you're not dropping the hammer daily on it, its a Dana 30 rear.

the 700 series and 900 series are really the same car, with just incremental improvements. the 200 (240 etc) were a older version of the chassis, but mostly the same running gear. the 240 certainly looks more retro, but IMHO, the 740/940 is a nicer body, nicer interior, quieter, better road manners, etc.

past that, the middle digit was 4 for the standard 4 cyl car, and 6 for either a v6/i6 or somethings a 4 cyl more luxury model. the 3rd digit used to be the number of doors, a 244 was a sedan, a 245 was a wagon, a 242 was a coupe, but they dropped that in the mid 80s and called them all 240
