Wink Shim and clearance.

Hello everyone.

I have a 88 Volvo 740 GL and would like to know what is a good spec to set my valve clearance at. I just gauged the intake and exhaust and they are all at .010. I will measure the shims tomorrow. But say I want them at .016. How do I get there. After I measure the shims, Shims=?, clearance is .010 how do I get it at 16.

Or I will take advice on where I should set it at. I have heard a good set for the clearance is .016.

I have to know so I will know what shims to order to get it set at .016 if that is a good number to set it at .

Loss of power going up hills. (Texas Street in San Diego)

Anyway, trying to get my car set where it SHOULD be...

Thanks for any honest advice.

On my 240 - the proper valve clearance is stamped on a plate on top of the driver side wheel well in the engine compartment.

You seem to be putting to much fault on valves . Your loss of power is most likely not connected to your valve clearance. Did you do a compression test or a leak down test. That would give you an indication of your power issue. If they are in spec then check all of the valve clearances and see if they are all in spec. If they are don't get to hung up on what they are but start looking for the real power issue.

Default Thanks Jagtoes

Your right.

I have since done the check twice and they are within specs.
I will do a compression test next.

I dont know what can be done beside go through the gas line and clean gas filter and check fuel pump. Actually the fuel pump either works or it doesn't , right. does the pump get clogged and can it be cleaned out.

SO yes I will do a compression, fuel assembly check and go from there .

Thanks.

It's quit possible it's just the piston rings due to 246k miles and I will just
have to keep it as is.

We have 363K on our 89 740 and don't have to much of a power problem but remember when new the motor only had 125HP. Fuel pumps either work or not. You have 2 pumps with one in the tank and one under the car below the left pass. seat. When did you last change the fuel filter.
