Default short out

i have a 89 740. none of my guages are working. i took the dash apart, and while putting it back in i crossed a wire and a puff of smoke! now the car does not run right. it will start, but die 30 seconds later, unless i give it gas. it does not matter if the dash is connected or not, it just wont run right. The regular fuses are fine. there are larger fuse type boxes behind the fuses, could one of these have fried?

also, is there a way to reset the engine management computer? like the fuse(#1), can i take it out for some amount of time and put it back the start it up in some order. im lokking for some proceeder.

I have seen this before but can't remember the fix.
You might have fried the clusteer so bad the signal isn't getting out to the engine.

Yes removing the fuse for the computer for atleast 15 minutes should reset it.

the problem was on the back of the guage cluster. the short busted one of the metal strips in the plastic wire sheet.(not really sure what to call it) so i used a sodering iron to make a connection, works fine now.
