Smokey Volvo
Hey folks, I was just wondering, why my volvo (940 se 2.4 turbo diesel) is so smokey. She doesn't burn oil, and fuel economy is very good. (450km with half a tank) But when driving at high revs, there is a lot of black smoke come from the exhaust. also when driving at 50 or 60 km/h in any gear and i push the accelerator all the way, there is a white grayish smoke coming. looks in the rear view mirror a little like its foggy outside. Really would like to know what that might be. Power and acceleration are good. Have a car test next week so i'd like to know if it is bad or not.

Most (all?) non common rail or turbo diesels produce some smoke at full throttle. The pumps are set rich to avoid detonation, which is bad at 22 to 1 compression.......
As long as the smoke is only there at 3/4 throttle plus (at any revs), you can just accept it as normal turbo diesel behaviour. But go ahead and check your air filter too. Intake restrictions will make a diesel smokey.
Have a look at a semi trailer or bus next time it takes off from a stop. Lots of smkoe initially and again at top of rev range.
Regards, Andrew.

My Volvo S60 D5 53 plate on 80,000 miles was very smokey, but I just had the auto transmission oil flushed and changed, and it seems to have improved! I don't know if its related, but it has made a big difference.
