Default So, new question,my 240 isnt starting...

so, my car isnt starting. its a 89 240 gl and ive gotten to the conclusion the fuel pumps arent working. I got it to start by spraying starter fluid but it turned off. from there i drew the conclusion that the fuel isnt getting to the engine. So i replaced the fuses for both pumps. I turned on the accessories but i couldnt hear the humming noise of the pumps. I find it weird that both pumps went out at the same time. So my friend told me it might be the relay for the pumps if its not the fuses. My question now is, where the relay for the pumps is at. also, i was told to jumper the fuses, but i dont know how to do that? So yah, any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

The relay is located under the glove box. All you need to do is remove the panel under the dashboard on the passenger side. It should be a gray plastic rectangular box.

For info on what wires to jumper to run the pumps, there is a nice picture in the article that can be found here: http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm

+1...pull the felt knee bolster off and look up by he firewall. The o.e. fuel relays vary in color depending on the injection system. Your 89 is LH 2.4 Bosch Jetronic so the relay will be white most likely. Scan-Tech does make some relays in off colors but most manufacturers still use the colors Bosch originally chose. If the relay has never been molested, it will be held up with a spring clip. If it has been changed before, it may very well be hanging loose.

If it's a B230 LH-Jetronic 2.2 engine, go to www.stepbystepvolvo.com for free guide to 740 no-starts.

Alright got it guys. thanks. the pumps both appear to be running. So im guessing it might be the coupling hose? Im just having trouble taking the pump out now. I saw that i could take it out using a chisel and a hammer? hit it gently counter clock wise?

Do the pumps run when you turn the key, or just when you short across the fuse? If only when you short the fuse, I'd replace the relay, if you haven't already.

This makes it easy:

I've seen people modify a c-clamp into a similar tool. I would replace the o-ring and pump sock also.

So the pumps do run?? then why are you pulling the pump if it works?? I would be checking to make sure you are gettin Fuel pressure, if you can tell that both pumps are coming on..

Well i was trying to take out the tank pump to check the hose to see if it was fine. We ended up figuriing out it had nothing to do with lack of fuel reaching the engine. We actually think that its getting too much gas now so its putting the spark out at the plugs. My boy checked the fuel injectors and they were working fine. He called his dad and he said either it was the egr valve or the map sensor? Dunnoo. The cars just been sitting there for like 3 weeks already though. I think I just wanna trash it -_- Its frustrating me.

when you pull the plugs out and slap them on your hand,
does fuel come out ?
when you crank the engine with the plugs out,
can you see and smell fuel vapor coming out of the holes ?
you would not hear the fuel pumps if the regulator was open
there is a hose on the back of it,
if you pinch that off while cranking, it will rule that out
open the oil fill cap, can you see the camshaft turning?
we should start from the beginning
start with the basics
spark ?
air ?
fuel ?
compression ?
timing ?
get back to us with more info.
these are great cars,
no reason for talk of trashing
