Something broke on my exhaust manifold and I cannot identify what it is
I have searched and looked in my Chiltons, and I just cant figure it out, on my drive home i hear something hit the underside of my car and suddenly a lawnmower noise, tracked the noise to this broke pipe lookong thing, seriously at a loss. I didnt have any power loss, the car idles fine, everything is running great, save for this ridiculous noise

That's an old EGR tube that has rotted apart and fallen off. It is also a safety issue since you are leaking exhaust fumes under the hood and those can kill you slowly.
My suggestion is to remove the exhaust manifold and ask a local machine shop to remove the tube from the manifold. They will probably have to heat it cherry red to get it out. As you are waiting for that to come back from the machine shop, you can shop for the new part, most likely available from the dealer. the other end of the EGR pipe will usually come off with a little effort.

Thank you! I looked on IPD at identifying EGR in the 92 240 but literally none of the diagrams looked like this one. I'll be taking the exhaust off today and take care of it at my brother in law's shop (he's a machinist)
Thanks for the heads up! I have had the car a month, we replaced the clutch and return spring first thing, I always wanted one of these. It's my daily so I have to work quickly, headed over to BIL house in a few to take care of it
I've seen a few of these years ago when I sold this model of used Volvo. I mostly saw them in the 940 series.
While you are at it, replace those plastic clips that hold the plug wires in place. They are generally available and cheap as all heck to buy.
This was the other end of the EGR... I think the previous owner already did an EGR delete because this was just sitting behind the motor with this end just hanging out under the intake manifold... This car has already had plenty of surprises in it, like hidden behind the black squares on the dash are a coolant temp gauge and an oil pressure gauge, any idea why someone would do it like this?
Well, another part from the dealer I guess. This was a buggered up job and whoever did this needs to understand that such "repairs" are unsafe.
Since you are talking about black squares, I assume that you have a 240. I suppose someone added them and they didn't work or looked bad so they just put the squares on the dash to finish it off.
It definitely was a buggered job. This is my first time really digging into the motor. This is going to be a restoration project for my wife and I. You are correct, it's a 240, and yes, the gauges are not working, they don't even have plumbing. I will be doing a small tach on one of the squares soon which is why I pulled them off. This car has a long way to go to be restored but i think it will be worth it, always wanted a 5 speed with a b230 +T so more or less a restomod
I see from the emissions plate that's a California car... all California cars have EGR starting around model year 1990. maybe a couple years earlier... I know our 1987 240 did NOT have EGR but my 1992 740 did as did my son's 1991 940.
I also don't see the EGR control valve in that last pic, it should be forward of the driver side strut tower. several vacuum nipples on your throttle appear to be capped off, too.
