Default speedo is irratic... needle jumps around at low speeds

just bought a 91 940 turbo, and the needle on the speedo is irratic at low speeds. sometimes (not all the time) the needle will "jump around" until you get up to around 30mph and then it smooths out and functions normally.

what could this be?

Check the speed sensor wiring for breaks at the sensor in the Diff. cover.
If all is good the sensor might be bad.

i'm not sure if i have located the right part, anyone have a picture of it or a diagram that shows the speed sensor's location?

or maybe someone can tell me if this is it(in the picture below)

the wiring is wrapped in electrical tape and looks worn. i am guessing this is it but just want to make sure.

also, anyone have the part number for the speed sensor and/or a website where i can buy one(not from the stealership, if possible!)

That is the engine speed sensor not the sensor that feeds the speedometer.

The one for the speedometer is in the rear end of the car. It is in the middle of the differental cover and has 2 wires going to the sensor.
